This function can be defined as the filing of a porous fabric between geomechanical properties of different materials (grain size, density, capacity, etc..) Allowing both materials permanently maintain their own physical integrity and preserving the function for which were put into service.

To avoid mixing the geotextile materials must withstand the static and dynamic filler and traffic during placement, as well as fines retention.

Mechanical Requirements: The geotextile must not be damaged during installation, execution of the work or later in the exploitation of it.

Hydraulic requirements: retention of fines in the case of static or dynamic solicitations of the filter by opening an appropriate value of pore also not hinder the flow of water too.

Durability requirements: The geotextile should have good chemical resistance, stability against ultraviolet radiation.
